An opening has come up at work for a role that my manger told me I could easily step in to as they've been really impressed with how I'm working. She had to put it to a board meeting first because they're the ones who make the final decisions. Now she's come back to me to tell me that they've decided that, because I'm too good at what I'm doing now, they won't give me the promotion. She then had the cheek to say I should take it as a compliment.

How does that make any sense!? Looks like I'm slowing right down now, I've had enough of going above and beyond.

AHOY MyLast FuckingNerve • 1d Time for a new job. I was told that exact thing and they were big mad when they found out i applied and got hired elsewhere for triple the money. Reply 41.6k ...

Couldnt BeMacie. 21h Same exact thing happened to me too. The promoted position wouldn't be handling the same work I was doing, not really anyway, and they didn't want to lose the productively I brought. I didn't leave for a better paying job though. I actually took a pay cut and told them that when they turned around and tried to keep me by offering an extra dollar an hour. I would rather get paid less than work there any longer with that type of attitude. ... 361

TkdSkater • 19h I just did the same thing. Took a pay cut to go somewhere else. Told them that and they had no idea what to say when I told them I was aware it was a pay cut and I was ok with that. ←4 79 +

pakulio404 1d ● This is just corporate speak for its time to look for a new job and make way more money somewhere else. Because you're so good at it. Reply 4307 ↓

parkesc. 1d Exactly - if you're too good to be promoted, you're too good for that company entirely. ... 493

Mac4491 1d Sounds like your manager doesn't want you to move up because then they'd have to find someone to fill that spot. I doubt this was discussed at the board meeting at all. I'd email the board members. Let them know you're interested in the position but you had heard from your manager that when it was discussed with them they rejected the idea because you're "too good at what you do now". Ask them politely if they could please explain the justification behind the decision as you're strugg

awatt4894 OP. 1d Thanks I never really thought it that way Edit: actually I forgot to mention that it was my manager who suggested the role for me so I'm not sure why she would do that 4343

sirchtheseeker • 1d Please do this. Had a manager do this and then found out when I left the company, the person above them always wondered why I didn't go gif one of the middle manager position so my direct boss never even submit my request or my resume. They lie all the time ... 473 +

Tactics28 1d Oh the work case conspiracy theorists of reddit. You're all so silly... A more realistic conversation at the meeting would have been: Boss: OP is perfect for this role. Upper management: great, who's going to replace OP? Boss: Someone less good.

Upper management: Well that doesn't seem great. (or alternatively that doesn't seem great and I already had someone in mind before you brought OP to my attention and I'd rather do things my way) OPs boss isn't going to suggest a promotion then come right back and say it can't be done if they fear OP leaving. They are never going to mention advancement at all and put the idea in their head. "you're too good at your job" seems like an attempt to sugar coat the rejection of her idea to him. 445 ...

Osro 1d ● It makes zero sense, but that's how it works They actually did you a favor. They straight up told you that you have no real future at this company. In their eyes you are just a robot who performs this task and then goes home. Start looking for a new job immediately, the only way out of this predicament is out Reply 443 + ...

On d2lover • 1d I was told the same when I worked at a Fortune 500. I trained all the folks that kept getting promoted over me. I questioned why I was not getting promoted as I was training all the folks that kept getting promoted over me and I was one of two people in a team of over 200 that had every certification our company offered. I was told that it wouldn't be in the best intere of he company to promote me as I was very good at what I did. I resigned shortly after and took a fat raise to
